English name:
Dwarf Kowhai 'Little Leaf'Latin name:
Sophora prostrata 'Little Leaf'About me:
I am an unusual plant with zigzagging branches and tiny leaves that sprout even more tiny leaves. My delicate looks make me a minimalist's dream!Useful to know:
Origin
I am native to New Zealand
Height/Growth
I can grow to 1.5m in height and 1.2m in width.
Light
I love sunshine and bright light so pop me near a window if you can. I'm ok with shadier spots too but I'll grow more slowly.
Water
I like my soil lightly moist - certainly when it's hot and bright - so keep watered but don't let me sit in it. A weekly watering should do it.
Temperature
Don't be fooled by my delicate looks - I'm tough and can withstand a mild winter outdoors even!
Feeding
A general plant food once a month during spring and summer will be enough for me.
Grooming
You can prune my lower branches in the autumn if you'd like to shape me into a tree.
Care
I am super hardy but please keep me away from hot radiators - they make me thirsty!
Toxicity
I am toxic so please don't eat me.
Fact
My common name kōwhai is Māori language for the colour yellow, because of the colour of the flowers, which are also the national flower of New Zealand. You would also like to read about a similar plant Maori 'Green Leaf'.
