English name:
Sensitive PlantLatin name:
Mimosa PudicaAbout me:
I'm famous for my shy sensibility. If you run your fingers along my leaves, they'll clam up, bashfully. To look after me well, keep me in a warm, humid atmosphere with plenty of light. I like my soil to be moist, but I need this moisture to be paired with heat.Useful to know:
Origin
Tropical Central and South America.
Height/Growth
I can grow up to 18 inches tall, and I'll bush out if you prune me.
Light
I really like light so find me a sunny spot and leave me there. Make sure it's not next to a draughty window though.
Water
As long as I'm in a warm environment, I like my soil to be moist, but don't let me sit in water.
Temperature
I like it hot! Temperatures of above 21 degrees are ideal but I can tolerate temperatures down to 13 degrees.
Feeding
I like a balanced fertilizer every two weeks throughout the spring and summer. During the winter months feeding me once a month is enough.
Grooming
If I'm getting tall and gangly, you can prune my overhanging bits with sharp shears and I should bush out.
Care
I like humidity, which you can simulate by misting my leaves or popping me on a pebble tray. I want to be reminded of my tropical home.
Toxicity
I'm best kept away from children and pets.
Fact
I'm used in pharmaceuticals to treat conditions such as asthma, inflammation and even leprosy!
