English name:
Long Leaf FigLatin name:
Ficus maclellandii 'Alii'About me:
I am a new-ish cultivar, tougher and less of a diva than my Ficus cousins, I won't drop my leaves easily! My slender leaves make me a stylish addition to any home, plus I'm a quick grower so will easily add a touch of drama and scale.
Useful to know:
Origin
I come from South East Asia.
Height/Growth
I can grow to a height of 3m! You can prune me to a desired height if that's too much for you.
Light
I'm pretty easy going when it comes to light - I like bright, indirect best but can also do well in low light and direct sun too.
Water
Water me when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. I like my soil evenly moist, but do not over water me or my leaves may drop.
Temperature
Room temperatures of 16-24°C are perfect. I don't like cold draughts!
Feeding
I don't ask for much - twice yearly fertilising will do.
Grooming
I love an occasional misting and trim me to keep my shape. Be careful with the latex from my stems as it's a skin irritant.
Care
I am hardier than other Ficus plants but my leaves may drop if I'm not getting enough light or incorrect water amounts. I recover quickly though!
Toxicity
I ooze latex which can be an irritant and my leaves are poisonous if ingested.
Fact
Although I originally come from South East Asia, I was first grown commercially in Hawaii where I got the Hawaiian name 'alii' meaning 'king.'
